To elaborate, if I wanted to be more explicit about which version I meant, I would write \[ 1 = \frac{8}{2(2+2)} \] or use more parentheses for \[ 1 = 8/(2(2 + 2)) \] but if I wanted the other way, I would write \[ 16 = \frac{8}{2}(2+2) \] or \[ 16 = \frac{8(2+2)}{2} \] or even \[ 16 = 8(2+2)/2 \] all of which are much less likely to be interpreted ambiguously.
