To elaborate, if I wanted to be more explicit about which version I meant, I would write

[ 1 = \frac{8}{2(2+2)} ]

or use more parentheses for

[ 1 = 8/(2(2 + 2)) ]

but if I wanted the other way, I would write

[ 16 = \frac{8}{2}(2+2) ]

or

[ 16 = \frac{8(2+2)}{2} ]

or even

[ 16 = 8(2+2)/2 ]

all of which are much less likely to be interpreted ambiguously.
